Volunteers in the Namibia Medical Volunteer Program will get to team up with hospital and clinic staff, getting a firsthand look at the common diseases affecting the local population and how they're treated. You'll be hands-on with patients from disadvantaged communities, providing care to those living in remote areas with limited resources.
Medical students can expect to learn basic clinical skills, like taking patient histories and conducting examinations. Trained professionals will assist with patient care and outreach efforts, lending a helping hand where necessary. This is a great chance for experienced volunteers to make a big difference for those who need it most.
Depending on the duration of your stay and your medical background, you might undertake research projects aimed at benefiting the clinic and its patients. The tasks involve mapping the distances patients travel to reach the clinic, studying local disease patterns, evaluating tuberculosis (TB) rates and medication adherence, and assessing patient understanding of HIV transmission and disease.
Skills and Qualifications
Volunteering in the medical program in Namibia requires a background in healthcare, whether as a doctor, nurse, or medical student. Additionally, volunteers should demonstrate patience, kindness, and a respect for local customs and traditions. You are also required to be 18 years or older.
While working in this medical volunteer program, every day will be full of fun and excitement and present you with lots of opportunities to get to know and interact with local people who are incredibly friendly and will welcome you with open arms.
First Day : On your first day of volunteering in medical project in Namibia, you will be escorted to your placement by a local coordinator and introduced to the local doctors, staff you’ll be working with. During this day you’ll get to know the hospital or clinic, and learn what your precise duties will be while volunteering.
Weekdays: Your work as a medical volunteer begins on the second day of the project, and while your exact tasks will vary from day to day and depending on the placement, a typical day will follow this outline:
6.00 to 7.30 AM: Early in the morning you will greet the day with a delicious breakfast.
7.45 AM: Once you’ve enjoyed breakfast, it’s time to head to your placement for a rewarding day of medical work.
12.00 PM: Around noon you’ll have a lunch break, and this is the time to rest and a chance to get to know the rest of the medical staff better.
3.00 PM: After a full day of volunteering, work usually ends around this time and the rest of your day is your free time that you can spend as you wish, exploring the local area and spending time with your colleagues.
Program Dates and Fees
IFRE programs begin every Monday year-round. If you have travel constraints, you can still start your chosen program on any day of the year.

The low weekly fee is paid in the host country directly to your host family and project (via country coordinator), and includes housing, food, and minor expenses. IFRE is a non-profit organization, so your program fees are tax deductible.

The program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the pro-gram to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the volun-teer abroad in Kenya program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses
Accommodation and Meal
Volunteers in the program will be accommodated in tents, typically shared by 2 to 4 individuals and equipped with necessary bedding. The hospitals and clinics are conveniently located near the accommodation, and volunteers have access to an on-site swimming pool. It's essential to follow the policy prohibiting unauthorized visitors without approval from the project leader. Moreover, volunteers will receive three daily meals prepared locally, including coffee.

Arrival and departure
Upon arrival in Namibia at Windhoek Hosea Kutako Airport (WHK), you'll be warmly welcomed by a local representative from Global Crossroad who will assist you throughout your journey. Please ensure to provide accurate flight details to facilitate timely pick-up arrangements. In case of any flight delays or missed connections, please notify us promptly so that alternative pick-up arrangements can be arranged. Kindly note that we do not provide airport drop-off services at the end of your volunteer program.
Visas
Securing a tourist visa is necessary unless you are from a visa-exempt country. The specific requirements and procedures vary depending on your nationality; thus it is essential to contact the nearest Namibian embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date information.
Vaccination
To work in our Namibia volunteering program, you will need some vaccination. The National Travel Health Network and Centre and WHO recommend the following vaccinations: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, cholera, yellow fever, rabies and tetanus.
